Spotted Flycatcher at Ferry Meadows

Here you'll find everything you need to know about birdwatching in and around the city.

In this area, we're fortunate enough to have some of the best inland birding in the country.

You can read the latest sightings, see the latest photos, discover the best sites to visit, and find out how to join the club. Why not come to one of our field trips or meetings?

Thanks to everyone who has been sending in records. You can submit records online, or download a spreadsheet to fill in. Watch out for our latest project - an online edition of the annual reports from 1998-2003.

We hope to see you soon!

Next field trip: Sunday, 22 March
Freiston Shore RSPB Reserve

For those who like a different leader, Roger Teasdale, will be leading this walk around the Freiston Shore RSPB reserve which is located on the west side of the Wash. Hopefully, this should be a good day for seeing the early returning waders. We will be meeting in the car park at the Freiston Shore RSPB Reserve (Grid Ref: TF398425) at 9:30. We are likely to stay at the reserve all morning.
In the afternoon for those interested, we will be visiting the RSPB Reserve at Frampton Marsh. The RSPB are developing this reserve in order to replace the brackish scrape at Titchwell which is in danger of being overwhelmed by lose of the dunes and increasing sea levels. The RSPB have purchased the arable fields behind the sea wall at Frampton Marsh and are converting it to scrapes and reed-filled ditches. They have also constructed hides on the reserve. Often when a new scrape is built it is extremely rich in invertebrates which attract good numbers of birds, especially waders. By March 2009 it is intended that these scrapes should be flooded and it could be an interesting opportunity to see a very new reserve being formed.
There are no refreshments or toilets at either site, so if you’re intending to visit both reserves please bring a packed lunch. Leader: Roger Teasdale. For further information please ring 01780 756925

Next indoor meeting: Tuesday 31st March 2009
From the Dummer-See to the Camargue

with Nick Williams; an acclaimed photographer, lecturer, author and tour leader, who lives just north of Bourne. Those of you who remember Nick’s previous audio-visual presentation will no doubt be looking forward to his account of birding adventures in Europe.

Note a change of venue for this meeting only. Due to a round of the National Darts Championship being held at our usual venue this month we will be meeting nearby at The New England Club & Institute in Occupation Road, which runs between Lincoln Road and Bourges Boulevard. Click this link for a map.

Midweek Walk: Tuesday, 7th April 2009
Greetham and Fort Henry Ponds

Meet at the carpark at 8:45am.

9:30am start. Leader: Roger Teasdale.
Roger has selected a new venue for the mid-week programme and with a variety of habitats available, we should pick up some interesting sightings. Fort Henry Ponds are ancient fishponds that attract good numbers of wildfowl and several rarities have been noted over the years. The surrounding parkland holds Corn Buntings, and Quail are sometimes heard in summer. Singing Hawfinches.

Rendezvous in the Greetham Golf Club car park (map ref: 946 135), which is reached from the A1 north of Stamford. Turn off at Cottesmore/Greetham junction and after one mile turn left (following brown sign to golf club). A mile further on turn right to club house.
